Episode 195: Aquaman and a Doomsday Christmas

This week Aaron’s favorite superhero, Aquaman, made his movie debut! So this week we had to talk about Aquaman. The episode ending up being on the short side so we thought we would include with it an old christmas episode of Synthahoolics that we lovingly called A Doomsday Christmas. Our thoughts on Aquaman do contain spoilers so if you are sensitive to spoilers please wait until after you have seen Aquaman before giving this episode a listen. We hope you all have a great Holiday season as the year closes out. We thank you for listening. Grab your favorite holiday drink it’s time for your weekly shot of the Synthaholics!

Synthaholics Episode 194: Spotting Dax III - Rules of Acquisition

It’s time for another episode of Spotting Dax! This week Aaron, Holly and David talk about the Star Trek Deep Space Nine season two episode Rules of Acquisition. Now we do hear you saying well isn’t this a Ferengi heavy episode? You would be correct this is a Ferengi episode but, Dax is a way more interesting character and shows more character development in this episode as a side character then she did for her last two episodes. Just minutes into watching Rules of Acquisition we knew this was going to be a heavy episode. The episode opens with Dax playing Tango with a group of Ferengi and they discus Ferengi culture and the way women are treated in their culture. So once we finish the recap we have quite the discussion.

Pour yourself a glass of tulaberry wine it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 193: Jetrel

It’s been a while since we have discussed a Voyager episode so this week Holly, Aaron, and David talk the Star Trek Voyager episode Jetrel. But first we have some news. Aaron discovered on his YouTube feed that he started seeing new videos from the Axanar channel so it seems like that is back in production. This week the third Short Trek the Brightest Star was released and Holly and Aaron caught up on the paste episodes so we discuss our thoughts on Calypso and The Brightest Star. Jetrel is a Voyager season one episode that centers on Neelix of all people. But this is actually a very solid episode with strong calls to World War II and Robert Oppenheimer. Jetrel is basically Oppenheimer and he developed a weapon of mass destruction that was used on the Talaxians. The episode is ultimately a message about forgiveness and Is really quite well done. Pour yourself a very strong drink, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Arron, Holly, and David are back this week to talk the TNG Episode Realm of Fear! No Star Trek news this week but the next Short Trek will be out before we record next week so we should of that to talk about next week. Realm of Fear is one of the Next Generation Episodes that features Dwight Schultz as Barclay! Barclay is one of our favorite recurring characters in Star Trek, so it’s about time we do an episode that is all about him. In this episode we learn Barclay has an extreme and possibly irrational fear of being transported. Barclay must overcome his fears to help solve the mystery about what happened to the USS Yosemite. Because this episode focuses on his fear that seems to be on the irrational side we get into a discussion on what some of our irrational fears are! Pour yourself a drink that will help calm your nerves it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 191: The Expanse

Aaron has returned from his Section 31 outing and with all of us together again we discuss the Enterprise season two episode The Expanse. Aaron did gather some news on his away mission. It seems Michael Dorn is interested in joining the Picard series if his part is meaningful. Also the Midnight’s Edge youtube channel did an interview with Wrath of Khan writer/director Nicholas Meyer. We have decided to tackle the Xindi Enterprise arc starting with this episode to examine is it really as bad or as good as some people remember. Do not fret this hasn’t just become an Enterprise podcast. We will keep our regular seemingly random selection of episodes until season two of Discovery airs. But each time we need to cover Enterprise will just move along the season one episode at a time! Grab your favorite drink to help you thought the Xindi arc it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 190: Annihilation

Aaron is off on an above top secret Section 31 mission so Holly and David use this week to talk about the 2018 Sci-fi Thriller Annihilation. Annihilation stars Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac in a very thought provoking sci-fi film where the main theme is self destruction. Holly gives us the movie recap this week and we discuss the film what we thought of it and some of our favorite and least favorite things about the film. Unfortunately this week was light on Star Trek news and Holly has yet to see the Short Trek Calypso. Pour yourself your finest mixed drink in honor of all the mixed up life forms in the shimmer, it’s time for your weekly shot of Science Fiction!

Episode 189: Star Trek 2009

Holly is missing but David and Aaron must boldly continue on to discuss the first Star Trek reboot film, Star Trek the Star Trek. Before we get into the main topic this week we discuss the news that Michelle Yeoh may be getting her own Star Trek spin off. Also this week the latest Short Trek is out unfortunately Aaron has not seen it but David has and he gives this thoughts on the second short trek. It has been a while since we have discussed a Star Trek movie on the podcast and since we have covered both into darkness and Star Trek Beyond, Star Trek 2009 seems like a good choice. While we both enjoyed this film for what it is, Aaron and David are both a little more worried now about the future of Star Trek on TV with Alex Kurtzman at the helm. Pour yourself your favorite 20th century drink it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 188: Spotting Dax II - Invasive Procedures

The Halloween time is over and it has been a while since we’ve Spotted Dax, so this week we are talking Invasive Procedures. This week unfortunately Holly was not able to join us but she emailed us audio of her thoughts for this episode. This week there wasn't really anything too newsworthy thought we do discuss our plans for Episode 200 toward the end of the show. So please tune in for that we are wanting listener participation to make episode 200 something very special! The second time Deep Space Nine gives Dax her own episode it is again somewhat underwhelming as it doesn't get to really show what the character is capable of. We will continue to look forward to when Dax comes into her own. Pour yourself a drink it’s time to be rejoined in your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Happy Halloween from Synthaholics and the Star Trek episode Catspaw! But before we get into the episode we have some Star Trek news. This week it was announced that there was going to be a new Star Trek animated sitcom called Lower Decks! We all give our thoughts and opinions on this new show before we break down Catspaw. Beware all who enter and listen to this podcast, lots of silliness ensues cat and bird noises abound! This episode we also talk about how Halloween was for each of us growing up, turns out the three of us all had some pretty strict upbringings when it comes to Halloween. Episode 184: I Borg

The three Synthaholics are back on their regular schedule and no audio issues! This week they discuss I Borg from the 5th season of Star Trek The Next Generation. Before we get into the episode discussion we have some Star Trek Discovery news. At NYCC the second trailer for Star Trek Discovery dropped and we were all pretty blown away by it. Robbie from The Nerdynomicon Podcast joins us to discuss the trailer before beaming out. The first Short Trek Runaway is out and we got full spoilers on it. I Borg is a fantastic episode involving the borg and deals with the moral questions of how we may view our enemies. Check out the Synthaholics YouTube channel to learn how to make a Borg Queen Martini so you can drink along with your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 183:  The Muse

Aaron, Holly, and David are back this week to discuss the Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode The Muse! It’s been a month but we are all back in the recording booth again. Due to technical difficulties our news segment and the beginning of the recap are missing. Luckily the majority of the show is intact and the important philosophical discussions about long life and moderate success vs short life and mind blowing success is all there. This episode surprised us as it was better then we remembered it being. The Muse is Majel Barrett final on screen performance as Lwaxana Troi and it is a very touching one with her side story with Odo. Pour yourself a tall drink it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Aaron and Holly break down the movie and discuss the similarities and differences between the book and the film adaptation. Michael chimes in to give his takes on the military aspects of the film. Aaron also brings to light some of the controversy author Orson Scott Card got caught up in that probably ended up making the movie not as successful as it could of been. Pour yourself a drink it’s time for your weekly shot of Science fiction!

Episode 181: In a Mirror, Darkly

Last week Holly had some burning questions about the Tholians, so Aaron and David join Holly and  we take a look at the next time we see the Tholians “In a Mirror, Darkly”! Before we get into the episode Aaron has some news from the Star Trek Discovery cast fresh out of Fan Expo. “In a Mirror, Darkly” is a two part episode in Star Trek Enterprise’s fourth season. In this two parter we find out what happens with the Defiant after it was lost in interphasic space. Oddly enough it ends up in the mirror universe 100 years in the past. After seeing Star Trek Discovery we all kind of scratch our heads at some of the actions that happen between the characters in this two parter. It seems at this time in the mirror universe everyone's a little less murdery. Because there are multiple times in these episodes where character fight but they just let the loser live once they are beaten. But all in all we enjoyed “In a Mirror, Darkly”. Pour yourself a Gorn drink it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 180: The Tholian Web

Aaron, Holly, and David are all together this week to talk about the TOS episode The Tholian Web. But before we get into the episode discussion Aaron has some news about how Star Trek Discovery basically plagiarized the indie video game Tardigrade. The Tholian Web has the unfortunate circumstances of being part of the third season of Star Trek. While neither a great episode or a terrible episode this episode has in a way had greatness thrust upon it. As The Tholian Web directly connects to the Enterprise Mirror Darkly two parter and the Star Trek Discovery mirror universe episodes. Love it or hate it The Tholian Web is a very important episode for Star Trek canon. Grab your liquefied Klingon nerve gas it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 179: Heroes and Demons

As promised last week Aaron and David are back to discuss the Star Trek Voyager episode Heroes and Demons. Before we get into the episode we talk the Star Trek Discovery news that Spock has been cast and the potential names for new Star Trek shows! In Heroes and Demons the Doctor has to bravely go to the Holodeck to find out what happened to Harry, Chakotay, and Tuvok. Funny thing Aaron and David both remember this episode differently before rewatching. The episode isn’t too much of a thinker because it’s basically Star Trek wanting to do Beowulf. But it is a fun episode seeing the Doctor totally as a fish out of water. Because we wrap up the Heroes and Demons talk early David asks Aaron his thoughts on if there is the potential for a Captain Pike Discovery spin off show. Pour yourself a tankard of mead and grab yourself a side of Elk it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 178: Synthaholics Short

Aaron is on vacation and Holly is away, David is alone but the show must go on! Holly and David recorded some audio before we recorded Episode 169 of the podcast to use on a rainy day. The rainy day has come! To supplement the unused audio David turned to a Facebook live chat to get a few ideas. So before we get to the unused audio David briefly talks about two of the topics mentioned in the chat, why are there no superheroes in Star Trek and my thoughts on the Disney streaming service. Once that’s out of the way Holly asked me some questions that maybe a non trekkie might ask or someone who’s new to Star Trek might ask. Pardon the sound issues as I used my handheld recorder to record the pre and and after show and the day we recorded hope and fear we had some clipping issues so those exist on the audio because we recorded these the same day. When everyone returns we will be talking the Voyager Episode Heroes and Demons!

Episode 177: Be Right Back

Holly Michelle is back this week to talk with Aaron and David about the Black Mirror Episode Be Right Back. Now don't turn to a different podcast just yet! We very specifically picked this episode because if you listened to last week's episode this episode fits in thematically to the discussion we had last week! Be Right Back deals with grief and what that does to a person. It also confronts what if our personalities were put into a robot and will that be enough? After the episode recap we talk more about if we would want to live on after death so maybe our families will remember us and what the future may looks like to our descendants. We hope you held on tightly do your drink as we made that hard left turn into Black Mirror! At the top of the show we discuss the news of Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard.

Episode 172: Empok Nor (Featuring Dutchess and Kirk)

Aaron and David welcome our friends Dutchess and Kirk to discuss the Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode Empok Nor. We met Dutchess and Kirk at the Nickel City Con back in May and discovered Star Trek was a common interest. The Star Trek news we discuss this week is that Patrick Stuart is in talks to voice Picard in an animated Star Trek tv show. At hearing this news David has a change of heart about the possibilities of a potential new animated series. Empok Nor is a fantastic episode that was selected by our guests this week. DS9 is being plagued with mechanical issues that just can’t be repaired and for some reason the parts they need can’t be replicated. Luckily the Cardasians have just abandoned Empok Nor a sister station to DS9. O’Brien, Garak and Nog lead an engineering team and a Bolian to their doom in hopes of collecting parts DS9 needs to function! You might want to drink hard for this one, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek

Episode 171: The Ballad of Thomas Riker

What happens when transporter accidents don't kill you? Aaron and David are here to recount the ballad of Thomas Riker. Some fates are worse than death, like being stuck alone for 8 years to find out that you actually did make it out. You could also be pining for a woman for 8 years just to find out she only wants to be friends. Or you could steal the most advanced federation warship and then turn yourself over to the Cardassians to work the rest of your days in a labor camp. You could also be promised a daring rescue by a woman who forgets about you when she falls in love with a changeling. The Ballad of Thomas Riker is one paved with much sorrow and regret! But before we jump into Star Trek The Next Generation episode “Second Chances” and the DS9 episode “Defiant” we have some more exciting star trek news to talk about! You may wipe the sweat from your brow no animated series episode today! Pour yourself a double of whatever you are drinking, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!
